Powerboat P1 has revealed that the reach of its worldwide broadcast deals this season has climbed to more than 200 million homes, with coverage on leading sports and entertainment channels in more than 150 countries across five continents. The international marine motorsports promoter is committed to the long-term development of its key brands – P1 Offshore racing, the UIM Class 1 race series and P1 AquaX jet ski racing - and believes that quality and robust media offerings are an essential building block to expand the sport.
Seven race teams from three continents competed in the final round of the 2023 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship in St. Petersburg on Florida’s Gulf Coast earlier this month. This international fleet reflects the momentum that has returned to the premier class of offshore racing. Powerboat P1 has welcomed new teams this year and further aims to grow the class nationally and abroad with more international teams, worldwide TV coverage and streaming opportunities. All six Class 1 races in this season’s five-venue championship are broadcast nationally on Bally Sports through its family of regional sports networks, and fans can watch Class 1 and APBA offshore national championship racing at three renowned Florida venues on CBS Sports Network and live on the P1 Offshore Facebook page.

P1 racing has a global profile due to its international race calendar and competitors. The company is currently in discussions with both leading sports networks and non-sports networks in selected markets. This effort aims to further extend the reach of their broadcast distribution. Coverage on leading sports channels includes the United Kingdom and Western Europe, Australia, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia, the Middle East and South America. The list of broadcasters includes CNBC, Seven Australia, MAVTV and the Nautical Channel. Newcomers to Powerboat P1’s international broadcast schedule include Viaplay Europe and UK, Zapping in Chile and Brazil, LCTV serving international airlines, IMG EDGEsport, AFRO TV the multi-cultural Black network, Dubai Sports, Abu Dhabi TV and new sports platform Psyched4 in the UK.
A significant and strategic move by Powerboat P1 has been the appointment of Dream Bay Entertainment, founded by veteran media professional and former Amazon Studios executive, Thomas Drachkovitch, to help build Class 1’s global media strategy and live TV offering. Thomas was a key executive within Amazon Studios’ International division where he helped spearhead the expansion of the studio globally, holding senior positions in Los Angeles, Mumbai and London.
Thomas Drachkovitch (pictured) commented: “We’re incredibly excited to join Azam and the P1 team to help further expand P1, Class 1 and AquaX. With Dream Bay’s global reach and local expertise, we’re strategically positioned to create a premium and world-class media offering. The popularity of the sport is growing rapidly and we’re eager to delight fans, both at home and at the races, with the most exciting show on water.”

Azam commented: “Thomas and Dream Bay bring extensive international TV and media experience to the team, making them the ideal partner to help take P1 Offshore, AquaX and Class 1 to the next level. How fans consume sport is always evolving, and we’re excited to develop an innovative approach to reach fans wherever they are. There has never been a more exciting time for powerboat racing.”
In October 2020, the UIM assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 offshore racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement, and P1 has a five-year agreement with the APBA giving it exclusive worldwide rights to film and distribute its offshore events.
This increasingly important brand within the P1 family encompasses the APBA offshore national championship series, with P1 having been granted by the APBA exclusive worldwide rights to film and distribute its offshore events for the next five years. At all race events, P1 produces a one-hour television highlights show, featuring Class 1 racing and other APBA classes, to be broadcast in the United States and internationally.
Class 1 is the premier class of offshore powerboat racing in the world and is considered to be one of the most spectacular marine motorsports. A Class 1 race boat has twin inboard 1100HP engines and can reach speed in excess of 160mph. The current UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship comprises six races in five U.S. venues with an international fleet of seven boats.
Launched in the UK in 2011 and now firmly established in the United States, the growth of AquaX is owed to its simple yet challenging race format. With events taking place on the sea, the aim at the outset was to appeal to recreational riders and attract new competitors by making the racing affordable and easy to enter with a logical, structured progression from amateur to professional racing. More than one thousand riders have competed in race series on three continents.
