“
We needed to show that we are the world champions. This was our year and although the result didn’t matter, we wanted to win the race. It wasn’t easy but we made a great start from P2 and once out front we could control the race. To win today was as important as winning the title, the motivation for us both was huge – go out and win.

Newly-crowned world champions Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella produced a champions-winning performance in 222 Offshore to cap off their season with victory in the final race of the 2023 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship at the Monster Energy P1 Offshore St. Petersburg Powerboat Grand Prix in Florida. “We needed to show that we are the world champions. This was our year and although the result didn’t matter, we wanted to win the race. It wasn’t easy but we made a great start from P2 and once out front we could control the race. To win today was as important as winning the title, the motivation for us both was huge – go out and win.”
Pole-sitters and outgoing champions Steve Curtis and Travis Pastrana kept the pressure on the race leaders for all the 11-lap 66-mile race to take second in Huski Ice Spritz, with Class 1 newbies Tyler Miller and Myrick Coil bringing their Monster Energy M Con Racing’s Skater home for a third successive podium. “We didn’t get a great start for many reasons, and it was always going to be hard to get passed them,” said Curtis. “We tried going wide, inside. Travis did a great job, but these Victory boats are very similar, I think we were quicker, but we just couldn’t get by them.”
dfYoung’s Rich Wyatt and Hugh Fuller brought their Mystic home in fourth despite some guardian issues with one engine ahead of Team Defalco’s Mike Fuller and Billy Moore’s Outerlimits to take third overall in the championship standings, with Pothole Heroes Johnny Tomlinson and Carlos de Quesada retiring on lap 8. “Third overall is a good feeling,” said Wyatt. “We’ve had our issues this season and some today but the win last time out and to take third overall is great for the team. We had a moment with M Con and that cost us pace and momentum and I think we could have had third.”
Nicholson and Carpitella got the jump on the pole-sitters from the green flag and soaked up the pressure from Huski Ice Spritz throughout, maintaining a three to six second advantage throughout to take their fourth win of the season, with Monster Energy M Con holding station in third from the start to the chequered flag. “It’s been a great weekend on the water here in St. Pete. P3 in qualifying and now a third straight race podium,” said Tyler Miller. “We made a good start, were in a good position at the first turn and just kept pushing. We had a good set up but once you get behind a few boats in their wash and spray it’s tough, you really need clean water to be able to keep stepping up. But all in all, we couldn’t be prouder. The team did a heck of a job and has done all season.”
