Huski Ice Spritz Quickest In Thrilling Qualifying Session

  • World Champions Nicholson and Carpitella in P2
  • XINSURANCE survive scare after losing rudder

We were running pretty hard and put in a good first lap and were heading to the far turn on our second when the boat started wallowing, going to the left then right and unable to control. I was feathering the throttle and Randy [Kent] was trying to keep the boat straight when we realised we had lost the rudder. Luckily it didn’t happen on the turn otherwise it would have been a nasty rollover. But we live to race another day but won’t be able to repair the boat in time for tomorrow.

Steve Curtis and Travis Pastrana produced the teams’ best qualifying performance of the season to top the time sheets in Huski Ice Spritz in a thrilling and dramatic session on Tampa Bay and will start the Monster Energy P1 Offshore St. Petersburg Powerboat Grand Prix, the final race of the season, in Pole Position, with XINSURANCE surviving a big scare and forced to pullout on their second run after losing their rudder.

The newly crowned champions Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella were first out and set the early pace with a best time of 2:50.54 on their first run to put 222 Offshore into provisional pole, but that time was immediately bettered by Curtis and Pastrana’s opening lap of 2:50.35, the outgoing champions then improving slightly to post 2:50.12s to seal pole position by four-tenths of a second.

Tyler Miller and Myrick Coil again showed why they are a force to be reckoned with and improved their chances and a shot at a top three championship finish after producing their best qualifying of the season putting their Monster Energy M Con Skater into P3 with a best time of 2:51.54 set on their second run, to edge out dfYoung’s Rich Wyatt and Hugh Fuller by three seconds.

XINSURANCE delivered a solid opening lap with 2:55.97 to go P5 with Grant Bruggemann and Randy Kent suddenly hitting trouble early into their second run and forced to stop after losing the rudder. “We were running pretty hard and put in a good first lap and were heading to the far turn on our second when the boat started wallowing, going to the left then right and unable to control,” said Bruggemann. “I was feathering the throttle and Randy [Kent] was trying to keep the boat straight when we realised we had lost the rudder. Luckily it didn’t happen on the turn otherwise it would have been a nasty rollover. But we live to race another day but won’t be able to repair the boat in time for tomorrow.”

Team Defalco’s Mike Falco and Billy Moore managed just one run but were well off the pace with 3:27.21, with Pothole Heroes Johnny Tomlinson and Carlos de Quesada starting the race from the outside after being forced to miss the session following a troublesome morning practice, first breaking a hose and then after going back out losing boost on one engine which they decided to replace and sit out qualifying.

Today’s 11-lap 66-mile Class 1 Grand Prix starts at 11.15 am EST and will be streamed live on class1world.com/watch-live and social media channels.
