It was hard, and we didn’t find the right set up until just before we went out. The wind changed so we moved some weight around in the boat and found the right balance and speed.

Championship leaders Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella proved once again to be the ‘kings of qualifying’ and will start tomorrow’s XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix from P1 after nailing their third successive pole position of the season in Michigan City.
In poor conditions the 222 Offshore duo were fast out of the blocks and immediately set the fastest time of 2:05.44s on their first of two flying laps. “It was hard, and we didn’t find the right set up until just before we went out,” Carpitella said. “The wind changed so we moved some weight around in the boat and found the right balance and speed.”
It was a case of déjà vu for their main title rivals Steve Curtis and Brit Lilly in Huski Ice Spritz, who missed out by just over two seconds, posting their best time, 2:07.51, on their first run. “It was a little bumpy out there and we thought we had had a pretty good run, but it was not good enough,” said Curtis. “Now we will all sit down, look at the data and see what we need to do. Tomorrow is another day; the weather can change so it is all to play for.”

Johnny Tomlinson and Carlos de Quesada produced their best qualifying of the season and missed P2 by a mere one-hundredth of a second, in what was the closest qualifying session of the season, with five seconds splitting the top five. “That was a much better qualifying for us. We have done some work on the boat, and it paid off,” commented Tomlinson. “We made a quick prop change just before we went out and it worked out well. Maybe we could have snatched second, but we are happy with today.”
Randy Kent and Grant Bruggemann produced an impressive showing in their first outing together, bringing XINSURANCE/Good Boy Vodka home in fourth spot with a time of 2:10.02, edging out Monster Energy/M Con by just under a second, with dfYoung in sixth ahead of Defalco. “For our first run together, this was a good result,” said Bruggemann. “We made a late prop call just before we went out thinking it was going to get rougher, but the conditions went the other way. With more time in the boat we can only improve.”
