Nicholson And Carpitella Cruise To Victory In Sarasota

  • Defending champions Curtis and Lilly hit trouble but salvage second spot
  • dfYoung overcome race-long issues to take final step on the podium

We pretty much had it covered off from the start I reckon, but physically it was a tough hard race. We were running up to 150mph, but it was like driving on a bumpy gravel road and everything was just shaking to bits, and we both took a bit of a pounding. What happened in Cocoa Beach was on our minds, especially when we came round the last corner and the bilge pump lights came on. We had a small leak somewhere but by then we knew we could bring it home.

Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella produced a faultless performance in 222 Offshore Team Navy and cruised to victory in a drama-filled race of attrition off Lido Beach in the Grand Prix of Sarasota, round 2 of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship.

After securing pole position in yesterday’s official qualifying, Nicholson and Carpitella immediately hit the front and were able to control the race from start-to-finish, gradually extending their lead over second-placed Huski Ice Spritz to 16 seconds with just a handful of laps remaining, when their rivals ran into trouble, allowing them to ease off and cruise to victory and banish the memories of losing out in the closing stages in Cocoa Beach in May. “We pretty much had it covered off from the start I reckon, but physically it was a tough hard race. We had a small leak somewhere but by then we knew we could bring it home.”

Today’s win moves the Australian-Italian duo onto level terms in the title race with Huski Ice Spritz’s Steve Curtis and Brit Lilly who hit trouble and slowed to a crawl on the penultimate lap with a technical issue but were eventually able to limp across the finish line to secure second place. “Not the result we wanted. We made a poor start and were fourth going into the first turn but after that kept in touch with 222 but then around lap 6, I felt the boat getting heavy and slowing. It turned out we had broken a bracket that holds a hose and the boat started to fill with water, so we pulled it over knowing we had second place.”

Following a blistering start from the outside in fifth Rich Wyatt and Hugh Fuller showed they had great pace but then clearly encountered problems and from then on had to manage technical issues for much of the 10-lap 60-mile race, but remarkably were able to keep dfYoung in contention to bring her home and take the final step of the podium. “The start was great, and the boat felt really strong but we then had some guardian issues with water pressure and dropped RPM but we felt we could just run at that pace, do the laps and get through the race.” said Rich Wyatt.

Behind the eventual podium finishers there was a trail of technical woes, frustration, and disappointment, not least for Tyler Miller and Myrick Coil in their new Monster Energy/M.CON Skater after qualifying in third, but their hopes of a podium disappeared when they ran into trouble on lap 3, and despite continuing missed out on any points.

After failing to post a time in qualifying due to fuel pump issues, the XINSURANCE/Good Boy Vodka duo of Alex Pratt and Miles Jennings looked to be running well and had moved up from sixth to third place on lap 2 when their return to racing came to an eventual end, their exit was then followed by that of Johnny Tomlinson and Travis Pastrana in Pothole Heroes, losing power after cracking a fitting on one of the coolant hoses.

The next round of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship takes place in Michigan City, Indiana on 4-6 August.
