I am happy with today’s performance, but we need to get the set up perfect tomorrow for the conditions. If we get the set up wrong, we will lose time and we need to be sure we will be the fastest.

Saturday, 20 May 2023, Cocoa Beach, Florida (USA): 222 Offshore Australia’s Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella dominated today’s official qualifying session and will start tomorrow’s race, the opening round of the 2023 UIM Class 1 World Championship, from Pole position.
The forecast for today’s qualifiers didn’t quite live up to expectations, as drivers were met with low winds and calm waters at Cocoa Beach. It was Australian-Italian duo, Nicholson and Giovanni, who responded to the conditions the best, posting the fastest time of the day in a lightning lap of 3:34,66s. A feat made even more impressive by the fact that they were almost out of the race this morning after a craning issue tore a hole in their boat.
Giovanni Carpitella, throttleman for 222 Offshore Australia team said “I am happy with today’s performance, but we need to get the set up perfect tomorrow for the conditions. If we get the set up wrong, we will lose time and we need to be sure we will be the fastest.”
It was 2022 World Champions, Steve Curtis and Brit Lilly, who claimed P2, just falling short of the 222 Offshore Australia team’s time by 2.23 seconds, despite using their bonus lap to try and best them.
“
After testing this morning, we thought it was going to get rougher, but it actually got calmer, so we had the wrong set up on the boat. We need some good luck and a little bit of a better set up and then it will be a dog fight until the end tomorrow.
