It was a day of celebrations yesterday (Sunday) for the Huski Racing team with its two boats, Huski Wear and Huski Chocolate, taking the top two places in the Key West Class 1 Championship. Having been crowned UIM Class 1 world champions in Clearwater at the end of September and after winning the opening Class 1 race on Friday, Steve Curtis and Brit Lilly (deputizing for Travis Pastrana) in the Huski Chocolate boat were favourites to claim the Key West Class 1 title. But that’s not how it turned out.
Originally, the fleet of six Class 1 boats had expected to compete in three races on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, but Storm Nicole forced officials to cancel the opening race. In flat conditions and with a huge crowd watching the championship decider over a 14-lap race of 63 miles, the two Huski boats were neck-and-neck at the first buoy with Tomlinson and de Quesada in the Huski Wear boat having the advantage of the inside track. They then took the lead with Curtis and Lilly in their wash for a whole lap, before Huski Chocolate lost an injector which slightly reduced its power and allowed the other Huski boat, a 50-foot Victory, to gradually move away to secure the championship.
On lap 4, New York-based Team Defalco had water in the engine bay causing an electrical shutdown and forcing owner/driver Mike Falco and throttleman Chris Hanley to retire. On lap 10, it was the turn of JBS Racing to drop out when the 42-foot MTI’s engine blew.
Team Defalco was making its Class 1 debut in the 48-foot Outerlimits and Mike Falco said: “We were very pleased with the boat’s performance and I can’t believe that a $5 drain plug put paid to our race today. We now have lots of work to do over the winter and we’re really looking forward to racing in the 2023 UIM Class 1 series.”
XINSURANCE Good Boy Vodka and dfYOUNG did not start yesterday’s race after suffering damage on Friday.
