The 12th year of Thunder On Cocoa Beach has attracted 56 boats, including five UIM Class 1 boats that can reach speeds of more than 160mph.
The Class 1 fleet has an international flavour with teams from three continents and this reflects the momentum that has returned to the premier class of offshore racing.
The teams will compete in eight races at six venues over the coming six months and all the World Championship action will be broadcast nationally in the United States and worldwide on leading sports channels.
Three veteran British racers – Steve Curtis in Huski Racing’s 47-foot catamaran, Mile Jennings driving for 345 Racing and Nigel Hook in the familiar red Lucas Oil boat – will be among those looking to be crowned world champion in the final event of the season in Key West in November.
