Biography

Steve Curtis is widely regarded as one of the all-time greats of the sport in a remarkable career spanning 40 years, during which he has won the UIM Class 1 world title an unprecedented nine times.

His racing career started out on two wheels, becoming schoolboy and junior motocross champion in England on 100cc and 125cc bikes before crossing the Atlantic in 1982 to take up powerboat racing professionally and become the youngest ever racer and first Brit to lift the coveted Sam Griffith Trophy.

He won his first world title in 1985, aged 21, alongside AJ Roberts and two years later with Justo Jay and Benny Lorenzo, both times running in a Cougar catamaran designed by his late Father, Clive. In 1996 he teamed up with Norwegian Bjorn Gjelsten to form their legendary partnership in Spirit of Norway winning the title five times. He was victorious again in 2005 alongside Bard Eker in the same boat, and in 2022 with Travis Pastrana and Brit Lilly.

As well as world titles he has notched up five European and four Middle East Championships, winning forty five Grand Prix and multiple OPA and SBI World and National titles in the USA.

Outside of the cockpit, he runs the UK-based family business, Cougar Marine and ORS (Offshore Racing Services) in the USA.

In 2006 he was awarded the MBE in Queen Elizabeth's 80th birthday honours list.

In 2024 Steve took over the throttles of Monster Energy / M CON Racing from owner Tyler Miller on a temporary basis whilst Tyler was recovering from a back operation.
